@Moritz – There is a quote “What to do until the mathematician arrives?” in George Dyson’s 2012 book “Turing’s Cathedral” pp 191.
The chapter is entitled “Monte Carlo” and the subject is mathematician Stan Ulam’s search for a more efficient way to navigate prohibitively large datasets.
The book does not attribute the quote to Ulam, though. Nicholas Metropolis and Marshall Rosenbluth are also mentioned.
Nice intro to path tracing. What is the name of the book on PBR?
